The Ultimate Stay in Tulum: Affordable, Fun, and Delicious at Mayan Monkey Hotel

Sitting in the jungle of Quintana Roo, Mexico, hides the best destination for solo travelers and group trips alike. The Mayan Monkey Hostel has it all. High energy, great food, social activities, quiet spaces & more. I felt safe throughout my entire stay and didn’t have any negative experiences. The atmosphere and facilities are perfect for both the slow paced traveler and the non-stop traveler alike.

Price & Cost 

I came across this hostel on Instagram about three years ago and the first thing that caught my eye was the price. In 2021, the reel boasted $15USD per night, but I’m here to tell you that I found it for $8USD when booking directly on their website. If you’re traveling during the off season you’re much more likely to find great deals. I was able to add a full breakfast for an additional $5USD per day. 

As a budget traveler on a tight budget, Mayan Monkey blew all my expectations out of the water. Having such affordable accommodation allowed me to enjoy the other aspects of my trip with less stress.

Facilities & Amenities

There are a variety of rooms available. Mixed-dorms, female-only and private rooms are all available. Because there are four floors of rooms at this particular location, it’s likely you’ll find what you’re looking for (but I still recommend booking at least a month in advance during tourist season).

This four story complex provided no shortage of amenities:

• Coworking space

• Outdoor & swim up bar

• Shared kitchen

• Laundry room (available at a small extra charge)

• Outdoor common area that doubles as the breakfast restaurant

• Indoor lounge space (where daily yoga is hosted)

• Free and fast Wi-Fi

Activities & Social Setting

Solo Traveler:

DO NOT MISS THESE! Their nightly activities are the best way to meet new friends in a low pressure and safe environment. I arrived the night of their “Mexican Fiesta” and joined their game night. I signed up solo and finished the night with 5 new friends from Germany, Australia & Canada! We did everything together for the remainder of our visit in Tulum; all thanks to Mayan Monkey and the free shots of tequila they gave out all night.

Group Travelers:

If you’re looking for high energy and a good vibe, Mayan Monkey hosts nightly themed parties and activities. Their bar is also open late, so you don’t have to go far to have a good time! Even better, when you’re ready to crash, your bed will be no more than 20 steps away. 

Food & Drinks

I decided to add a full breakfast to my experience for its convenience and affordability. For roughly $5USD I got my choice of the following each morning

• Tea OR coffee

• Orange juice OR a fruit plate with yogurt, granola and a side of toast

• Any entree on the menu

ON TOP of it being an absolute bargain, it was delicious, tasty & aesthetic. 

Drinks could be a little expensive. But each night they do have their happy hour from 7PM-8PM AND 10PM-11PM. Their classic cocktails during this time would be buy one get one free. Absolutely worth the price and absolutely delicious. Not to mention that if you participate in their activities, you’re almost guaranteed a few free shots throughout their night.

Excursions & Extras

At the front desk you have the option to book one of their many excursions including a city bike tour, a full day cenote tour and more. These can be on the more expensive side, but if you are looking for something hands off and convenient, this is your best option! 

My top recommendation would be to rent a bike for your stay. Mayan Monkey has a large collection of cruiser bikes (with baskets) that make it incredibly easy to get around the city. For no more than $8USD per day, this makes it the most convenient and affordable.
