Planning your first trip to Europe? Exciting, right?!
Whether you're backpacking across the continent or enjoying a luxurious city break, packing can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re a first-timer. But don't worry—I’ve got you covered! This guide will walk you through the essentials you'll need to pack, so you can feel prepared and stress-free for your next adventure.

1. Travel Documents & Essentials
Before you even think about packing clothes or hair care, make sure you have these travel must-haves:
Passport (with at least 6 months validity)
Travel insurance details
Copies of important documents (passport, visa, health insurance)
Flight & accommodation confirmations
Travel wallet for easy access to cash, cards, and tickets
Credit & debit cards (with international use enabled)
2. Clothing Basics
Europe’s weather can be unpredictable depending on when and where you visit, so pack versatile clothing that can be layered:
Comfortable walking shoes: Cobblestone streets are common, so choose something sturdy.
Lightweight clothing: Pack outfits you can mix and match—think t-shirts, lightweight sweaters, and versatile pants or jeans.
Weatherproof jacket: A lightweight, foldable rain jacket is essential, especially if you are traveling during the winter months.
Accessories: Sunglasses, a scarf, and a hat can elevate an outfit and keep you comfortable in changing weather.
Packing cubes: These are a lifesaver for keeping your clothes organized. And I personally use one to keep my dirty laundry separate from my clean clothes!
Here are some basic packing cubes perfect for any traveler.

3. Tech & Gadgets
Whether you’re staying connected or capturing every moment, these gadgets are a must:
Travel adapter: Europe has different plug types, so you’ll need a good adapter. Universal adaptors can be bulky but handy. There are a few great options available on Amazon.
These adaptors are my all time favorite found on Amazon.
Portable charger/power bank: To keep your phone, camera, and other devices charged on the go. This is especially helpful if you have a long day with no stops at your hotel.
Smartphone: Make sure it’s unlocked if you plan to use a European SIM card. Otherwise make sure you talk to your phone provider to set up an international plan.
Earbuds or headphones: Perfect for long train rides or flights. Bring wired earbuds if you want to watch a movie on the long flight.
Camera or GoPro (if you’re into photography).
4. Toiletries & Health
You won’t need to pack everything, but here are some essentials that can come in handy:
Basic toiletries (travel-size shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, etc.)
Medications: Bring any prescription meds along with copies of your prescription.
Hand sanitizer: Especially useful for public transport and high-traffic areas.
Reusable water bottle: Europe has excellent tap water in many places.
5. Europe-Specific Travel Items
There are a few things you might not think to pack but could be lifesavers in Europe:
Daypack: Perfect for sightseeing or day trips. Tote bags are perfect as well as small fanny packs.
Reusable shopping bag: Many European countries charge for plastic bags, so bringing your own is eco-friendly and convenient.
Guidebook or offline maps: Not everywhere has reliable internet, so download maps or carry a guidebook with you.
Locker Lock: This will come in super handy to lock up your personal belongings in you are staying at hostels.
6. Personal Comfort Items
You’ll want to feel comfortable while traveling, so don’t forget these extras:
Neck pillow: For those long flights or train journeys.
Snacks: Perfect for when you need a quick energy boost while on the go.
Journal: For jotting down your favorite memories or travel notes.
Travel towel: A quick-drying towel can be handy if you’re staying in hostels or doing any outdoor activities.
These are my favorites found on Amazon.
7. Final Packing Tips
Pack light! Trust me, you won’t need as much as you think. Stick to the essentials and leave room for souvenirs.
Roll your clothes: This saves space and prevents wrinkles.
Check baggage restrictions: Many European airlines have strict baggage policies, especially budget carriers.
Packing for your first trip to Europe doesn’t have to be stressful. With this guide, you’ll have all the essentials to ensure your journey is smooth and comfortable. Remember, you can always pick up something you forgot along the way, but having these basics will help you start your adventure off right!
Safe travels! 🌍✈️
