5 Reasons Why Winter is the Best Time to Visit Europe

Less Crowded
Tourist season typically runs from March to October in most parts of the European Union. On March 1st, I saw the streets flood with tourists from all over. As soon as the weather brings out a sunny day, suddenly planes and hotels are at full capacity. Because of this, during the summer season, museum tickets can sell out fast, dinner reservations can be more difficult to secure and most public places can make anyone feel claustrophobic. Sufficient to say that out of the 6 times I’ve been to Rome during peak season, I’ve only managed to get tickets to the Vatican Museum ONCE.
None of these are an issue during the winter months! You won’t have to book tickets months in advance, you can visit your favorite cafes and you’ll always find room at the most picturesque views. A less crowded environment makes for a more relaxing vacation. I’ve noticed that I feed off of other people’s energy and the environment. If there’s barely enough space to stand on the metro, I can feel my stress levels rising and my restlessness peak.
More Affordable
Hotel and flight prices fluctuate as they mirror the tourist season. A 7 day trip from Phoenix to Rome in January averaged $500-$600 while the same 7 days in June averaged upwards of $1,200. That’s more than 2x the price!!! So, if you’re looking to make your trip more budget friendly, winter is the time to go. You’ll save on flights, transportation and accommodations.

Christmas Markets
Everyone should visit the Christmas Markets at least once. From Mulled wine to roasted chestnuts, panettone and Raclette cheese, these seasonal treats can make up most of your meals real quick. Most of these markets are open after Thanksgiving and some run until early January.
Here are some of my favorites you should definitely add to your list:
Vienna, Austria
Florence, Italy
London, England
Bordeaux, France
The first Christmas Market I ever visited was in London at Trafalgar Square, and it did not disappoint. The Grinch stood no chance. If you want to feel the holiday spirit, this is the place to do it. Christmas carolers, hot chocolate, sparkling lights and enough candy to stuff an elephant.
*It is important to note that all of the Christmas markets have different times and dates that they are open! Be sure to visit the official website for details.

Winter Fashion
Winter fashion, in my opinion, is far more stylish. While during summer you do get to live in a bikini, you also feel the humidity as soon as you step outside of the hotel. On top of that, a lot of restaurants, bars and even Airbnbs don’t have air conditioning units for the hot humid months. You’re always sweaty, always sticky and can’t find a cup of ice cold water anywhere.
During the colder months, it’s easier to add layers and bundle up in a cute scarf and earmuffs. Heating systems are found in most public buildings and restaurants with outdoor seating have portable space heaters to keep you warm.

I love a good pair of leather boots, gloves and a matching scarf. To me, there’s an elevated feel of elegance you can only find in winter fashion. It can make anyone feel like they could be living in a Hallmark movie.
Better in Winter
Europe in winter doesn’t get the credit it deserves. There are so many unique opportunities that don’t come up during the summer seasons. From ice skating to Christmas markets and listening to Vivaldi's The Four Seasons by candlelight, there’s something for everyone.
The best European countries to visit during the winter:
Switzerland
France
Austria
Spain
Italy
Truth is, there’s never a wrong time to visit Europe. If you are looking for stereotypical summers of Aperol and bikini filled days, you can find that. But winter offers so much more than people realize. Nothing like admiring the Christmas lights over a cup of mulled wine.
